Share of obese and overweight population in selected countries 2014

This statistic depicts the percentage of overweight or obese people in selected countries in 2014. In the United States, 67.4 percent of the population can be considered overweight or obese. Obesity has almost doubled in the global population since 1980. An increase of energy-dense foods that are high in fat and a lack of physical activity due to sedentary work, changing transportation modes, and urbanization has been highly influential in increasing obesity rates. According to the World Health Organization, a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is overweight, while a BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obesity. This statistic includes both groups.
