The value of overall card payments in the euro area grew by five trillion euros between 2021 and 2022, the largest increase seen since 2000. Before that, the total value of transactions increased steadily with fluctuation. In 2022, approximately 2.7 trillion euros worth of card payments were carried out in the euro area as a whole.
