In 2023, the number of colleges of technology in Japan amounted to 58. There was an increase in the number of private colleges of technology in 2023 compared to the previous decade. The majority of those colleges were national institutions. Colleges of technology in Japan run for five years after junior high schools and are considered equivalent to junior colleges and professional training colleges. Students mainly study either engineering or merchant marine at colleges of technology.
