In 2022, over 18 percent, the southern state of Uttar Pradesh had the largest share of domestic tourist visits. Tamil Nadu followed at nearly 13 percent. The monuments in the coastal town of Mamallapuram, also known as Mahabalipuram was the most visited monument around Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
