The volume of iron and steel loaded at major Indian ports to be sent to Vietnam amounted to around 691 thousand metric tons at the end of fiscal year 2023. The port sector of the south Asian country handled over 1.4 billion metric tons of cargo in 2023. A major portion of this cargo was handled by the major ports.

Major ports are under the union list while the non-major ports are under the concurrent list of the constitution of India. Therefore, major ports are under the administrative control of government of India while the non-major ports are governed by the respective maritime state governments.
