The majority of Japanese surveyed in 2020 were planning to celebrate Christmas with their partner or spouse, while under one percent had intensions to spend the holidays with colleagues. Almost 12 percent of respondents reported to be alone over Christmas.
In contrast to Western traditions, Christmas in Japan is often celebrated with friends or in private between romantic partners, similar to New Year's Eve in North American or European countries. Rather a time to socialize and attend parties, Japanese Christmas celebrations have little to do with family gatherings or religious traditions.
