The average price of a cinema ticket in Australia has remained stable in recent years, and has seen steady, incremental year on year growth since 2007, reaching 15.24 Australian dollars in 2021. The maximum average ticket price has seen greater fluctuation; 2007 and 2008 saw a maximum ticket price of 20 Australian dollars, prices peaked at 28.5 Australian dollars in 2011 and fell to 22 Australian dollars in 2019. Australian cinemas have enjoyed steady attendance figures; attendance has remained at around the 70 percent since 2013, fluctuating by a maximum of four percent year on year. However, the attendance rates fell drastically in 2020 and 2021 due to mandatory closures of cinemas during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cinema ownership and number of screens
Australian cinema screens were mostly owned independently in 2021; 31 percent, the largest market share, were not owned by a company. In terms of numbers, this share translates to 706 privately owned screens. By comparison, the largest company, Event Cinemas, had a market share of 23 percent, or 524 screens.
