The Faroe Islands are located approximately halfway between Scotland and Iceland in the North Atlantic. The country is an island group consisting of 18 mountainous islands; all but one are inhabited. It is a self-governing nation within the Kingdom of Denmark. Nevertheless, it is not a member of the European Union. Since 2013, the population of the Faroe Islands increased slightly and reached a number of 54,500 inhabitants as of 2023. At that time, Streymoy was not only the largest island but also the most inhabited, with a population amounting to nearly 26,000 people. Lítla Dímun and Koltur are the smallest Faroese islands and are uninhabited.
Municipalities
Tórshavnar is the municipality of the Faroese capital Tórshavn, covering the southern half of Streymoy. In 2022, the municipality was the largest by population size, reaching a number almost 22,800 inhabitants. This equates to roughly 42 percent of the total population of the Faroe Islands.
Age and gender
When comparing the Faroese population by age and gender, the highest number of inhabitants were aged zero to nine years. Among these, there were 3,787 boys and 3,621 girls registered. The age group of 50-59 years ranked second.
