In a survey conducted in 2018, 1.45 percent of Japanese respondents among those aged 40 to 64 were classified as hikikomori (social shut-ins). Based on this number, the study estimated that about 613,000 middle-aged hikikomori exist throughout Japan. The survey was focusing on the middle-aged population because earlier research had shown an increasing percentage of people whose social withdrawal had continued for more than seven years.
