In 2023, around 470 million people were employed in urban areas of China, while around 270 million were employed in rural areas. In 2022, the number of urban employees had declined for the first time since 1962. This was mainly related to the coronavirus pandemic, and urban employment figures rebounded strongly in 2023. However, the average annual increase of urban employment has softened over the last decade.
