Chile: number of torture victims 2019, by gender
In October 2019, protests broken out in Chile's capital, Santiago, triggered by transport fares being raised. The protests were also related to other underlying social issues, such as high living costs and inequality in the country. The situation escalated in the following weeks, with protests expanding to other Chilean cities and the Army being deployed to help maintain order. In the period between October 19 and November 30, several complaints of human rights violations conducted by security forces were filed, including accusations of torture. The complaints represented 568 torture victims, out of which 446 were men and 115 were women.
