The leading reason to start keeping a cat in Japan was that it was picked up as a lost or stray pet as revealed in a survey conducted in October 2022. While over 30 percent of respondents started keeping a cat after it came to them, only 7.7 percent desired a pet cat after seeing one in a pet shop.
