In 2022, the median number of daily downloads needed for Android mobile apps in the United States to rank as top app in the Google Play Store was 56,000, down by 32.5 percent compared to 2019. Mobile gaming apps required fewer downloads to rank the highest in the Google Play Store, with a median of 37,000 downloads. In 2020, the increase in app usage and downloads driven by the global coronavirus pandemic brought the number of downloads needed to rank first for Android apps to a median of 87,000 per day. iOS apps distributed on the Apple App Store found themselves in a much more competitive environment, with the median number of daily downloads required to rank first surpassing 150,000 downloads in 2022.
