With a share of 52 percent, enteric fermentation accounted for the largest share of emissions from India's agriculture sector in 2019 (excluding energy emissions). Enteric fermentation is a part of the digestive process in ruminant animals such as cattle, sheep, and buffalo. This process produces large amounts of methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas that has significantly more warming power than carbon dioxide, making it a key driver of climate change. India has the largest cattle population in the world.
