In 2021, Germany was the country in the European Union which spent the greatest amount on military and defense. The 52 billion which it spent, however, amounted to only 1.5 percent of its GDP, short of the two percent target set by NATO. Germany's military spending is likely to rise over the 2020s, as the country adjusts to the geopolitical crisis caused by Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
