The average CO2 emission levels have been decreasing steadily during the time period observed. In 2001, the average carbon dioxide emission level was 177.8 grams per kilometer. The reduction in CO2 emissions can be attributed to a number of factors, including greener automotive technologies, increased awareness of the effects of greenhouse gases, the introduction of emissions-based vehicle excise duty, and government grants for ultra-low emission vehicles. In 2018 the average level of carbon dioxide emissions for all licensed cars in Great Britain dropped to 141.9 grams per kilometer, the lowest level during the recordings in this statistic.
