NBA finals: upfront cost of a TV commercial 2014-2018

To have their advertising air on TV during the last game of NBA finals in 2018, U.S. advertisers had to pay more than 750 thousand dollars. Interestingly, at the same time ad placement during the first game cost 10 thousand more. The rates for advertising during TV broadcasts of sports finals are constantly rising, and while Super Bowl is the obvious frontrunner in this regard, NBA finals are not exempt from the trend.

How does NBA compare to other sporting events in terms of advertising?

Throughout the last decade of sports broadcasts, Super Bowl has been leading the pack and generating the highest TV ad revenues, second only to Olympic Games. While the highest results for those two events reached roughly 420 million U.S. dollars (Super Bowl) and 1.97 billion U.S. dollars (the Olympics), the largest amount generated by NBA finals was in 2015, at 251 million. However, with the growing number of viewers tuning into NBA broadcasts, ad revenues have yet a chance to increase.
