According to a study conducted in October 2021, the participation rate of learning, self-education, and training was highest in the age group 20 to 24 years, with 56.5 percent. That year, 26.3 percent of respondents aged 70 years and above reported to be engaged in learning during leisure time.

The survey has been conducted every five years by the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
Learning and training activities include studying foreign languages, commerce and business, caring, home economics and housework, humanities, social and natural science, and arts and culture.
