Between 2012 and 2022, the number of children enrolled in kindergartens in Italy experienced a decrease. In the school year 2012/2013, about 1.7 million pupils were enrolled in kindergartens across Italy. During the latest recorded school year, the number of children enrolled dropped to just over 1.3 million. There is an evident correlation between the declining enrollment numbers and Italy's consistently decreasing birth rate.
