Leading food retailers in Russia 2023, by market share
The X5 Retail Group, which includes Pyaterochka, Perekrestok, and Chizhik brands, had the largest share in the Russian food retail market at over 14 percent in 2023. The group reported a revenue of over 3.1 trillion Russian rubles in that year, having earned 20.8 percent more than in the previous year.
Magnit in European and global rankings
Magnit, the second-leading food retailer in Russia, accounted for a 10.6-percent share in the country’s food retail market. With a forecast revenue of almost 39 billion euros in 2023, it ranks 10th among Europe’s highest-earning food retail companies in 2023. Furthermore, Magnit is one of the largest employers worldwide, counting 357,000 staff. The company was founded in 1994 and has its headquarters in Krasnodar.
Russian e-grocery market leaders
Online grocery shopping has become a habit of many Russians, and some of the leading food retailers are also among the highest-earning e-grocery providers, such as VkusVill, SberMarket, and the X5 Group. Pyaterochka’s mobile app became the world’s seventh-most downloaded food delivery and takeout app in 2023 after it was installed over 18 million times.
