The Coles Group is one of the Australia’s largest and oldest supermarket chains, and in 2019 had the second largest customer penetration in the country, reaching 6.34 million households. Their main market rival, Woolworths Group, had a customer penetration of 7.2 million households, and German chain Aldi reached 4.76 million households. Nearest rival Aldi took around 12.8 billion Australian dollars.
Online grocery shopping
Online grocery shopping is attracting a significant level of interest in Australia. A 2018 survey revealed that 34 percent of Coles Group customers would be prepared to do their shopping online. The same share of Woolworths Group customers agreed, and 26 percent of Aldi customers did too. In a survey conducted in 2019, 61 percent of shoppers said they would do their shop online if shipping was made free. Just under 21 percent of those who had previously ordered groceries online said that they had done so for convenience reasons, and around 13 percent said they had bought online to save time.
