In terms of incoming international visitors, the Philippines received about 339 thousand South Korean tourists and 170 thousand Chinese tourists in 2020. Overall, the country saw a significant decline in tourist arrivals in that year as a result of the travel suspensions implemented in the light of the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Contribution of tourism to the economy
As a measure of the industry's contribution to the Philippine economy, the export value of travel services was approximately 16 billion Philippine pesos during the second quarter of 2021. The gross valued added generated from transportation services, one of the leading expenditures in tourism, amounted to 359.33 billion Philippine pesos in 2020.
