The 30th US presidential election took place in 1904, and was contested between incumbent President Theodore Roosevelt of the Republican Party and the Democratic Party's Alton B. Parker. Roosevelt had taken over the presidency following the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901, and faced little competition for the Republican nomination. Control of the Democratic Party had been retaken by the more conservative wing of the party, and Parker was nominated as their candidate after two rounds of voting. As Parker was more conservative than the previous Democratic candidate, his politics were more closely aligned with those of Roosevelt, and the campaign was based mostly on their personalities.
Results
Roosevelt defeated Parker with the most convincing victory in over eighty years. The incumbent President swept the north, winning 32 states to Parker's 13, giving him more than 70 percent of the electoral votes. Roosevelt also received over 56 percent of the popular vote, compared to Parker's 38 percent. The remainder of the popular votes went to a number of candidates, with the largest share going to Eugene V. Debs of the Socialist Party.
