The total net revenue of China's leading online retailer JD.com increased gradually between 2014 and 2021, peaking at around 951.6 billion yuan in 2021. Since its launch in 2004, the B2C online shopping platform has become one of the most prominent players in the industry.

How has the pandemic reshaped JD.com's business?

Unlike its rival Alibaba, JD.com started its epic journey as an offline brick and mortar business that offered multimedia equipment. The outbreak of the SARS pandemic in 2003 marked the first watershed moment in JD's history. Suffering from a tremendous loss, JD decided to move its retail business online. The online retail website 360buy was the forerunner to JD.com.
The outbreak of the coronavirus in 2020 granted JD.com new opportunities to excel. Lockdowns and social restrictions have fueled e-commerce businesses in China. In that year, the number of active customers and the total revenue of JD.com has grown at a remarkable speed, making it the second-largest online store worldwide, next to Amazon.
