Christmas spending in Germany typically includes shopping for gifts and buying food for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals, usually with family.
Most wonderful time
The lead-up to Christmas is a lucrative time for retailers, both online and off. Revenue from online Christmas sales in Germany has only been increasing in recent years, forecast to amount to 17.5 billion euros in 2020 (compared to 5.1 billion euros achieved ten years ago). No wonder, considering the convenient choices online Christmas shopping offers customers: browsing and selecting both at home and on the go, 24/7 shop access, easy payment and home delivery or several pick-up options. Many online shops also offer gift wrapping. Meanwhile, retail sales revenue during the Christmas trading period amounted to almost 102 billion euros in 2019, also an increase on the previous year.
Christmas trees
An important spending item in most Christmas budgets is, of course, a Christmas tree. In 2019, almost 30 million Christmas trees were sold in Germany. An increasing number of consumers also bought their tree online.
