The lowest quarterly net operating income of the U.S. banking industry was measured in the fourth quarter of 2008, at a negative 35 billion U.S. dollars. After the global financial crisis, the average quarterly income of all FDIC-insured institutions grew steadily, although with fluctuations. A sharp decrease took place due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the first half of 2020, but it stabilized by the end of 2021. After 2021, however, the U.S. banking industry saw another steady decrease in its quarterly income. Towards the end of 2022, it started to increase again and stood at 81.7 billion U.S. dollars in the first quarter of 2023.
