In 2021, the chemicals and energy producer that spent the most on research and development (R&D) was German company BASF, who spent over 2.2 billion euros. They were closely followed by Metallurgical Corporation of China, who spent just short of 2.2 billions that year. In total, 22 billion euros were spent by chemical companies and 17 billion euros by energy companies on R&D worldwide in 2020.
