The coronavirus COVID-19, which originated in Wuhan, China, has spread worldwide. Across the different regions in the world, the number of cases is continuously increasing. As of May 19, 2022, over 244.6 thousand people in the city of Quezon in the National Capital Region of the Philippines had been infected or were currently infected with the virus.
Omicron variant threat
The enhanced threat brought about by the new Omicron variant caused the national government and various local government units to re-impose lockdown measures to manage the gradual surge of COVID-19 infections. In several cities with growing number of infections, the possibilities of reinforcing border controls were being studied. Further limitations on international travel were to be expected with travelers from six countries, including Spain, were classified as high-risk countries thus banned from entering the country. The new total cases of COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines have reached around 2.84 million as of January 2022.
Limited movement for the unvaccinated
As a measure to limit movement and encourage more people to get vaccinated, un-vaccinated Filipinos in Metro Manila will be banned from entering malls and from taking public transportation with the exception of essential trips. Despite having the highest number of fully vaccinated individuals, most cities in the region recorded among the highest number of infections in recent months.
