Greenhouse gas emissions covered by carbon taxes varies greatly worldwide. In 2021, an estimated 35 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in France were covered by a carbon tax. France has one of the one of the highest carbon tax rates worldwide, at 49 U.S. dollars per metric ton of CO2 equivalent. Carbon tax revenues in France amounted to 8.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2021.
