Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions covered by carbon taxes vary greatly worldwide. As of April 2024, an estimated 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in France were covered by a carbon tax. Carbon taxes cover around six percent of global GHG emissions.

The estimate of emissions coverage for each carbon pricing instrument is based wherever possible on official government sources and considers the scope (sectors, fuels, and/or gases) of policies but does not necessarily factor in all exemptions and/or emissions thresholds or free allocations.
