Share of jurisdiction's GHG emissions covered by ETS 2024

The share of emissions covered by emissions trading systems (ETS) varies widely by jurisdiction. As of April 2024, the EU ETS covered roughly 38 percent of the blocs greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, the recently launched national ETS in China covered nearly 32 percent of the country's total emissions. This makes it the largest carbon market in the world in terms of emissions covered. 

The sectors covered by ETS differ among jurisdictions. For example, the China ETS and RGGI currently cover CO₂ emissions from their respective power sectors, while the EU ETS covers emissions from the power sector, domestic aviation, and industrial activities, and as of 2024, has been extended to cover the maritime industry.
