Share of jurisdiction's GHG emissions covered by ETS 2021

The share of emissions covered by emissions trading systems (ETS) around the world varies widely by jurisdiction. As of 2021, the EU ETS covered roughly 40 percent of EU greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, the recently launched national ETS in China covered some 33 percent of the country's total GHG emissions, or roughly 4.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. This makes it the largest carbon market in the world in terms of emissions covered.

The sectors covered varies by ETS differs by jurisdiction. For example, the China ETS and RGGI currently cover CO2 emissions from their respective power sectors, while the EU ETS covers emissions from the power sector, domestic aviation, and industrial activities.
