Weekly API2 Rotterdam coal prices 2021-2023
API2 Rotterdam coal futures amounted to 135.1 U.S. dollars per 1,000 metric tons on April 10, 2023 for contracts with delivery in the same month. API2 Rotterdam is a Europe-wide coal price benchmark. Import prices for thermal coal have become more volatile since the latter half of 2021 following an energy supply shortage. These supply issues were further exacerbated following the Russia-Ukraine war and European Union sanctions on Russian coal imports, which were adopted in early April 2022. Many EU countries have a Russian coal import dependency that exceeds 50 percent.
