Enterprise resource planning is business management software that is used by a company to collect, manage, and interpret data from business activities. This can include data from segments such as product planning, market and sales, and inventory management. ERP software is a lucrative industry and is considered a vital tool in business because it integrates varied organizational systems and reduces the possibility of errors in transactions and production.

SAP is a German multinational enterprise software corporation headquartered in Walldorf, Germany. The company has regional offices in 130 countries across the world and recorded global revenue of 16.8 billion euros in 2013. Of this revenue in 2013, some 14 billion euros was generated by sales of its software and software-related services business segment. SAP’s largest regional market in 2013 was Europe, where just under 50 percent of its revenue was generated. The United States was also a profitable market for the company, with around 4.7 billion euros generated in the country in 2013.

Oracle is the second largest ERP software company in the world, with its revenue in 2014 exceeding 38 billion U.S. dollars. Around 30 billion U.S. dollars of this revenue was made in the software segment and a further 5.4 billion U.S. dollars was generated in hardware systems.
