The number of mobile phone users worldwide is projected to reach almost 5.3 billion in 2017. About 30 million of them will be located in Canada, with the number of mobile phone users in the country expected to grow by about one million per year until 2017.
In 2014, the number of mobile subscribers – the number of SIM card connections registered on a mobile network – reached 28.41 million in Canada. With almost 30 percent of the market share, Bell Canada leads the service providers industry, followed by Rogers and TELUS.
In Canada, the majority of mobile phone users are smartphone users. It is forecasted that 65.5 percent of mobile phone users will be using smartphones by 2017. Browsing the internet, using Facebook, and playing games are some of the most popular activities among Canadian smartphone users. They also use their devices to send text messages, access news and information, and check the weather and emails. In terms of mobile apps, health, fitness and sports apps have seen a rise in popularity between 2014 and 2015.
