This statistic shows the evolution of wine consumption in France from 2007 to 2019. Wine consumption in France reached a peak of 32 million hectoliters in 2007. By 2019, wine consumption had fallen to approximately 26.5 million hectoliters.
Wine is one of the most beloved drinks in France, and that comes with no surprises as France is one of the largest wine producers in the world. Since the Roman times, France has been contributing to build up a reputation as “the country of wine” and has done its best to embrace the culture of winemaking.
Over the years, the consumption of wine in France has decreased from 33 million liters in 2007 to 26.5 million liters in 2019.This is also the case for the consumption per capita. A French consumer used to drink 50 liters of wine in 2007, whereas the consumption went down to 40.7 liters in 2019.
Every French house has a special place for wine. In 2019, more than 31 liters of wine were purchased per household. A special mention should be made of wine with Protected Designation of Origin (Appellation d'Origine Protégée) and without geographical indication (Sans Indication Géographique). That same year, a French household used annually 15 liters of PDO wine, compared to 17 liters of SIG wine.
When it comes to price, the French spent more money on a liter of PDO wine, around five euros a liter, in 2019. In contrast, the liter of IGP wine amounted for three euros the same year. This price difference was undoubtedly due to the quality of wine.
