Walmart in Canada - additional information

Walmart is one of the world’s largest retail companies, with total revenue amounting to 514.41 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. It was founded by Samuel Walton in Bentonville, Arkansas, in 1962, where its headquarters continue to reside to the present day. However, Walmart Canada was established in the early 90s when the company acquired 122 Woolco stores in Canada. As of January 31, 2019, it operated 411 locations across Canada. In Canada, the company includes Walmart discount stores, Supercenters and Sam’s Club stores. With more than 80 thousand employees, the company is one of the largest private employers in Canada.

Instead of offering a very good deal every once in a while, Walmart’s philosophy is to offer the best possible price every day of the year. The primary marketing strategy is to keep retail prices low and therefore the company is widely associated with the slogan “Everyday Low Price”. The strategy of offering low prices is based on the following key factors: Slim margins, but higher sales volume and the minimization of operating costs. Its large volume of sales enables Walmart to make substantial profits. In 2017, Walmart controlled over seven percent of the grocery market in Canada.

Although nearly half the Canadian consumers stated they regularly shop at Walmart, the retailer has been the subject of criticism for using low prices to drive out rivals and local businesses.
