As of January 2021, more than 1.1 million foreign people lived in Lombardy, the region in Italy with the highest number of foreign residents. Lazio and Emilia-Romagna followed, with 623 thousand and 542 thousand individuals, respectively. The Italian region with the lowest number of foreign residents as of 2021 was Aosta Valley, with eight thousand foreign residents.
