The vast majority of the world’s almonds are grown and harvested in the United States. In the 2023/24 crop year the United States produced over 1.1 million metric tons of almonds. The second leading producer of almonds was European Union in that year, with about 147.7 thousand metric tons of almonds.
Almond production
Almonds require full sun, a warm climate, and a large amount of water in order to thrive and produce nuts. Because they are especially vulnerable to cold weather, places like California are ideal for cultivating almonds. Over the last several years, almond production has decreased worldwide, from about 1.8 million metric tons in 2020/21 to 1.5 million metric tons in 2022/23.
Almond consumption and products
Almonds are a very versatile nut; they can be consumed raw or roasted, they can be ground into almond butter or used to produce almond milk. Among the different varieties of tree nuts, almonds are the second most commonly consumed, followed by walnuts. In 2022/23, about 2.56 million metric tons of walnuts were consumed worldwide.
