In 2022, unemployment affected approximately 1.79 million people in Japan, marking a decrease from the previous year. The number of unemployed people decreased by close to 1.7 million compared to 2003 when unemployment was the highest in the last two decades.

An unemployed person refers to an individual aged 15 years and older who satisfies the following conditions:
1. with no job and did not work at all during the period
2. ready to work if work is available
3. did any job-seeking activity or was preparing to start a business during the period (including waiting on the outcome of job-seeking activity done in the past)
