Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Mexico 2016-2024
In the first quarter of 2024, foreign direct investments (FDI) in Mexico amounted to approximately 20.3 billion U.S. dollars. That represents a considerable decrease in comparison to the FDI stock registered in the same quarter of the previous year, which amounted to nearly 23.5 billion dollars.
North America reigns supreme
The positive impact of FDI to developing countries is well documented, including economic development of the host country and the profitability, while some of the areas the host country must be on the lookout are exploitation of the workforce and natural resources. As well as being the main trade partner, the United States is the country that most invest in Mexico, followed by Spain and Canada. As of where is the investment directed, Mexico City is by far the federal entity with the highest FDI.
International confidence in Mexico
As of 2023, almost 73.5 percent of the total value of investments in the country had as the category of re-investments, showing a strong confidence in Mexico. Another 14 percent of the FDI were new investments. As for the industry that received the highest value, manufacturing recorded around 17.8 billion USD. Followed by finance with over seven billion dollars.
