Quarterly Netflix subscribers count worldwide 2013-2024

Jul 18, 2024 | Video Streaming

Netflix had around 277.65 million paid subscribers worldwide as of the second quarter of 2024. This marked an increase of over eight million subscribers compared with the previous quarter. Most Netflix subscribers are based in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, and Africa), accounting for almost 94 million of Netflix’s total global subscriber base.

Who is Netflix’s audience?

Subscribers are from diverse ethnic backgrounds – data on Netflix subscribers by ethnicity found that more Hispanic and African Americans watch Netflix on a daily basis than their white counterparts. Additionally, openly published data on the gender of Netflix employees in 2022 revealed that the company performs extremely well in terms of achieving an even split. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Netflix appeals to all age groups, and a survey indicated that the majority of adults aged 18 to 54 years old subscribed to the service.

New business model

Due to losses in its subscriber base recorded in the first half of 2022, Netflix introduced an ad-supported tier in November 2022 to offset customer and revenue declines. Indeed, recent data showed that nearly one in three sign-ups to Netflix in September 2023 were on the ad-supported plan. Furthermore, while the subscription revenue of the streaming provider is expected to decline in the years to come, the advertising revenue is forecast to increase, showing the high value of hybrid business models to the streaming market these days.

U.S. ChatGPT and Gemini app downloads 2024

Jul 18, 2024 | Apps

In June 2024, ChatGPT’s mobile app registered over 2.44 million App Store and Google Play downloads in the United States. Released on February 8, 2024, and initially available in the U.S. market only, Google’s Gemini AI Assistant mobile app registered around 554,000 downloads during the same month. Kicked off by the release of OpenAI’s AI assistant, the AI-powered online search market trend propelled the release of several similar applications mentioning “ChatGPT” or “chatbot”, reaching millions of downloads worldwide.

A reputation preceding its name

Released in November 2022 and available as an app in April 2023, ChatGPT took only five days to reach more than a million users and become the fastest internet service to reach this milestone. Launched by OpenAI as a mobile app on iOS for the United States market, the chatbot registered nearly four million downloads already during its first month on the Apple App Store and, as the startup made it available in other markets in June 2023, it generated over 12 million downloads, reaching another 16 million downloads in August as the app was launched on Android.

The AI race is on

Setting new standards for the global online search market, the release of ChatGPT caught companies like Google and Microsoft by surprise. The first quickly rushed to offer its own alternative AI assistant Bard, now rebranded as Gemini after the company’s large language model (LLM) system, while the second quickly sided with OpenAI’s assistant by integrating it into several of its Bing search engine’s services and applications. Despite roughly one year after its release, the impact of search chatbots is already visible on Google Search search market share on desktop, which registered some of its lowest rates for these devices in over a decade.

Trade balance of goods China by month 2022-2024

Jul 18, 2024 | International Trade

In June 2024, the trade surplus in China amounted to approximately 99.05 billion U.S. dollars. A positive value implies a trade surplus, a negative trade balance implies a trade deficit.

International trade in China

China surpassed the United States as the worlds’ largest goods trading economy in 2013. Despite the impacts of the global coronavirus pandemic, the total value of China’s imports and exports amounted to more than 5.9 trillion U.S. dollars in 2023.
China has become a vital trade partner for many economies. In 2023, over 427 billion U.S. dollars worth of the United States’ imports originated in China, making China its second largest import partner.

A trade surplus occurs when exports of a country exceed its imports. It leads to a net inflow of domestic currency from foreign countries. The trade balance is a major growth factor for an economy. Because of running a large trade surplus, China holds a vast amount of foreign exchange reserves. Foreign exchange reserves may be viewed as a sign of national strength, but also represent a form of forced savings on the people. China was the country with the highest trade surplus of approximately 877.6 billion U.S. dollars as of 2022.

Average weekly earning growth in the UK compared with inflation 2001-2024

Jul 18, 2024 | Wages & Salaries

In the three months to May 2024, average weekly earnings for total pay in the United Kingdom grew by 5.7 percent, while pay excluding bonuses also grew by 5.7 percent, when compared with the same period in 2022. In the same month, the inflation rate for the Consumer Price Index was two percent, indicating that wages were rising faster than prices that month.

Recent waves of industrial action in the UK

One of the main consequences of this combination of high inflation and lower wage growth has been an increase in industrial actions, such as strikes, in the UK. In December 2022, for example, there were approximately 826,000 working days lost due to labor disputes. Throughout this month, workers across a variety of industry sectors were involved in industrial disputes, such as nurses, train drivers, and driving instructors. Many of the workers that took part in strikes were part of the UK's public sector, which saw far weaker wage growth than that of the private sector throughout 2022. Widespread industrial action continued into 2023, with approximately 303,000 workers involved in industrial disputes in March 2023.

Average salaries in the UK

In 2023, the average salary for full-time workers in the UK was 34,963 British pounds a year, up from 33,061 in the previous year. In London, the average annual salary was far higher than the rest of the country, at 44,370 pounds per year, compared with just 31,200 in North East England. There also still exists a considerable gender pay gap in the UK, which increased to 7.7 percent for full-time workers in 2023 up from 7.6 percent in 2022. Lastly, the monthly earnings of the top one percent in the UK was over 15,000 pounds as of October 2023, far higher than even that of the top five percent, who earned 7,226 pounds per month, while pay for the lowest 10 percent of earners was just 755 pounds per month.
