After the departure of the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen from her post, the reasons behind the sudden resignation of the Trump administration official are not yet known. Still, Nielsen’s departure has intensified the discussion around a possible closure of the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump has in the past criticized Nielsen heavily for the perceived inability of the Department of Homeland Security to minimize illegal border crossings
on the Southern U.S. border.
In the past weeks, Trump has repeatedly threatened to close the border to stop the illegal crossings. In fiscal year 2018, more than 1,000 people were apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border per day on average
, even though the preliminary numbers for FY2019 would be higher because of a recent surge in undocumented migrants.
At the same time, around 126,000 pedestrians and almost 400,000 people travelling in approximately 210,000 cars
crossed the border every day during 2018, as well as approximately US$1.7 billion in goods and services.
