Coal energy production in South Africa 2005-2021
In 2021, the total energy production from coal in South Africa was measured at 4.98 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu). Moreover, almost 94 percent of the energy produced in the country was generated by coal, placing South Africa as dependent on the resource for energy production. Coal energy output peaked in 2014 at 5.73 quadrillion Btu. Besides, primary energy consumption from coal was lower than production, amounting to 3.85 quadrillion Btu as of 2021.
