Kabaddi beyond borders
Kabaddi is an indigenous team sport that originated in the Indian subcontinent and is popular in South Asia. The word "kabaddi" came from the Tamil words Kai Pudi, meaning to hold with hands. The World Kabaddi Federation organizes several competitions throughout the year, of which the world cup was last held in 2019 at Melaka, Malaysia. India defeated Iraq to win in the men's category, while Taiwan was defeated by the Indian national women's team that year.
Bringing Kabaddi to the big screen
Following the success of the Indian Premier League and Indian Super League in the franchise formats, the idea was extended to Kabaddi in 2014. The resulting Pro Kabaddi League made the traditional sport even more popular, with a focus on marketing, backed by a TV broadcaster. The first broadcasted season saw 435 million viewers watching the matches.
