An estimated 1.8 million metric tons of electronic waste were shipped in a controlled manner worldwide in 2019. Of this total, 1.5 million metric tons were reported as hazardous waste with prior informed consent under the Basel Convention, and 0.3 million metric tons were printed circuit board waste. Asia was the biggest overall exporter of e-waste that year, shipping roughly 1.1 million metric tons worth. Meanwhile, Africa exported just 19 million metric tons of e-waste, but imported a considerable amount of uncontrolled e-waste shipments. In total, an estimated 5.1 million metric tons of electronic waste were shipped worldwide.
