Plastics use in the European Union has tripled over the past four decades. In 1980, some 23 million metric tons of plastic was consumed by EU Member States, and by 2019 this figure had reached 67 million metric tons. There was a noticeable drop in plastics use in 2008 due to the global financial crisis, but consumption rebounded in 2010.
