This statistic illustrates the number of smart meters deployed in the United States annually from 2008 to 2016. In 2016, 5.9 million smart meter units were added. Many smart meters were installed in 2010 and 2011 due to stimulus from funding given out in 2009 which was employed by many of the largest utilities.

The stimulus funding for smart meters, the Smart Grid Investment Grant established in 2009 , prompted a significant increase in installations in 2010 and 2011. Smart meter deployment in the United States reached a peak in 2011 when 12.6 million units were deployed. More recently, in 2016, the smart meter installed base reached 5.9 million units. Smaller electric utilities have also been approved to pay for installations through their retail sales revenues. Although the smart meter market in the United States has declined, it is eexpected that the smart meter market will see growth in other regions .
In the last few years, the cost of smart meters has decreased, as smart metering becomes more widespread. Smart grid spending in the U.S. is largely divided between smart metering and distribution automation. Competition from manufacturers abroad has also led to the decrease in pricing. Itron is one of the largest producers of smart meters in the United States. Apart from smart meters, Itron provides both products and services for water and energy resource management. The company generated 1.88 billion U.S. dollars in 2015.
In 2015, Pacific Gas & Electric had over 5.1 million smart meter units installed. Utilities with a large base of installed meters are also investing in other services to benefit from the metering data available to them. Smart meter deployment has become more prominent among many regions in the United States and globally - however, it has been found that it is necessary to raise awareness of smart metering and provide more information and support to consumers in order realize the energy efficiency benefits of this technology.
