OBI, Bauhaus and Hornbach were the most popular DIY and home improvement stores in Germany as of 2019. Almost 29 percent of the population had shopped at OBI. All three companies are successful on a national level and also have branches in other European countries. Bauhaus traces its roots back to Switzerland.

The three DIY and home improvement market leaders constantly rank at the top in various assessments among private customers and industry professionals alike. In fact, it’s a fairly typical conversation topic among the population, which store, or which brand one prefers. Most recently, OBI outstripped the two other runner ups by far in terms of customers, recording almost 20.4 million in 2019. Contributing factors include store numbers and availability, prices and variety and, of course, customer service. The German population generally enjoys home improvement and DIY activities. Most prefer to make the corresponding purchases in a shop, though a growing share also look for products online.

The German DIY segment in particular is experiencing growth. Interest in spending leisure time on DIY activities is increasing year-on-year, and so are revenues from selling DIY products online. These are offered both by such large chains as the ones mentioned here, as well as smaller shops which are also a growing part of the competition.
