Europe: leading DIY retailers 2021, by revenue

In 2021, Groupe Adeo, formerly known as Leroy Merlin Group, was the leading Do-It-Yourself (DIY) retailer in Europe, reaching a revenue of 25.54 billion euros. The British multinational retailer Kingfisher followed, with 15.42 billion euros.

Europe's second leading DIY retailer, the Kingfisher Group, owns multiple brands such as B&Q, Castorama, Brico Depot, and Screwfix. It was initially founded as a UK company, with B&Q as a leading brand within the United Kingdom. The retail profit for this chain has increased year over year since 2015, with 2020/2021 showing a profit of over 680 million British pounds, and Screwfix had the largest number of stores among DIY retailers in the country.

The pandemic and DIY

With the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the measures taken to mitigate it, more people spent time at home. DIY was one of most common hobbies picked up during lockdowns, and according to a survey conducted in France in March 2020, roughly 28 percent of the respondents said DIY and gardening were one of the hobbies they enjoyed the most during the confinement period. In the United Kingdom, there was a year-on-year increase of over 47 percent in the online sales of paint products around the time the coronavirus outbreak reached the country, in March 2020.
