In 2020, roughly 37.7 million people suffered from HIV worldwide. This was an decrease compared to the previous year, although the number of people living with HIV steadily grew from 2000 to 2019. Nonetheless, the number of new HIV infections decreased over time.
HIV epidemiology in Italy
In Italy, the regions of Lazio, Lombardy, and Emilia Romagna were the ones with the greatest number of people newly diagnosed with HIV in 2021. The virus was mainly prevalent among males aged 30 to 49 years old during this same period. Indeed, 389 men aged between 30 and 39 years, and 371 between 40 and 49 years old, were newly diagnosed with HIV.
