Number of restaurants in Belgium 2008-2019

Observing the restaurant industry in Belgium, the number of restaurants increased year by year. In 2008, approximately 29,500 restaurants could be found in Belgium, whereas by 2019 this had increased to 33,999. Concerning the volume of quick service restaurants, a similar development was seen. Between 2008 and 2019, the volume of quick service restaurants increased by nearly 3,280.

Annual turnover increase of the food service industry

Examining the total turnover of the food service industry in Belgium, the revenue steadily increased. As of 2017, the turnover of the food industry increased to approximately 12.5 billion euros, the highest turnover within the 2007 to 2017 time period. Categorizing the food service industry by sector in Belgium, the restaurant industry generated the highest turnover with roughly 8.5 billion euros. The Catering and cafes and bars sectors saw the revenue amount to 2.32 and 1.68 billion euros respectively.

Volume of Michelin star restaurants

Restaurants can be awarded for their excellent kitchen and staff with a so-called Michelin-stars. In Belgium 104 restaurants were rewarded with one Michelin star, whereas 24 two Michelin star and one restaurant with three Michelin stars were found in Belgium as well.
